Measurement 4 (QSB2125)

Measurement 4 is the main unit for this semester 4. Without passing this unit, we are not allow to go for the intern-ship.

Sr. Chang is the lecturer for this unit. Form this unit, we learnt how to measure for bored piles, demolition works and various external work such as drainage, sewage, water reticulation and etc. Besides, we also learn from the SMM2.

For the measurement 4 assignment, this is the first time for us to measurement and calculate for one unit of terrace house. From this assignment, we need to refer back to the previous work and measurement that we learnt in the last few semester. From this assignment, we did a lots of revisions.

In the end, we also need to prepare for the tender document.

Professional Practice 1 (QSB2615)

Sr. Chang is also the lecturer for this Professional Practice 1.

From this unit, we able to define the qualifications required of a Quantity Surveyor, duties of Quantity Surveyor and the roles of various parties involved in the building team, construction contracts and contractual obligations.

From the assignment,  we prepared a proposal for the client, for recommended them the best procurement method which can meet the client's requirement with the most advantages. through this assignment, can know that, the role for the quantity surveyor is not only for the measurement, it also can prepare the proposal for the client, give them some suggestions in the construction industry.

Structure (QSB2523)

From the unit, I learnt about the general understanding of engineer design for building. Ir. Chai is the lecturer for structure.

We learnt theory and calculation from this unit. It is really hard for me due to I am not from the science stream student, I never study Physic before. However, I have good coursemates and lecturer taught me one by one until I fully understanding. I think I did quite good in my mid term test. I believe I also can did well in the final exam.

For the structure assignment, it is a group assignment. We discussed together, worked together and asked Ir. Chai for those part that we do not understand.

I also believe that this unit can help me in the future when I work together with the engineer.

Estimating (QSB2134)

Ms. Azrina is our estimating lecture. From this unit, we learnt how to identify and distinguish the various terminology related to estimating, measurement and unit rates including the objectives and various components of estimating, measurement and unit rates at different stages of construction procurement. 

Estimating assignment is a group assignment which wants us to find out the material rates, build up the rates and also prepare the tender document. From this assignment, we learnt how to find out the material cost, build up the rates and also prepared the tender documents even though at the end our group lose the tender. However, we enjoyed when we were doing the assignment.

We learnt a lots when prepared and tried to win the tender such as what should we do and prepare before the submission of the tender. Then after the assignment, we analysis and justify the goodness and errors of the tender result enable to improve ourselves in the future.

Software Application for Quantity Surveying (QSB2813)

Software Application is a very interesting unit. Before study this unit, I never know that there are some software programs prepared for the quantity surveyors to use, make the life easy.

In the first 7 weeks, we taught by Ms. Habizah. She taught us about BUILDSOFT software. it is a software which can allow the user to prepare the price lists, build up rate and Bills of Quantities.

The first assignment is a group assignment. From the first assignment which prepared by the Ms. Habizah, I able to distinguish different types of software programs available in the market; not only in Malaysia also the worldwide such as QS Plus, Autodesk Quantity Takeoff, VICO office: 5D BIM, Invovaya Visual Quantity Takeoff and etc.

The following 7 weeks, Mr. Soon taught us about the CostX software. CostX is really useful when it comes to the measurement and also prepare the Bills of Quantities.

The second assignment is an individual assignment. In the second assignment, we used the quantities form the measurement 4 assignment and the rates from the estimating assignment. We combined both quantities and rates together to complete it. 

I believe these two software will be really helpful in my future career.
